Heart-Shaped Doughnut was a music project by Aybar Aydin (bass), Andrew Lection (guitar), and Alex Marse (drums).

The trio met in 2012 while studying for their Masters in Music Technology at New York University, and they quickly bonded over their shared music interests. Their love for artists such as Slint, This Heat, Women, Preoccupations, Tortoise, and Captain Beefheart inspired them to hit the practice studio in Bushwick to see what kinds of sounds they could create together.

Their efforts quickly bore fruit, and after a few months of diligent practice, they had created several tracks that were ready for the recording studio. Recording took place in August 2015 at Mozart Street Studio in Brooklyn, NY. The trio were so well rehearsed that they only needed one day to lay down their tracks.

Soon after recording, life sent the trio their separate ways – Alex moved to California, Aybar had a baby, and Andrew worked to finish his Master’s thesis. They still managed to work on mixing the tracks between jobs, school, and diaper changes.

Despite living in different parts of the continent, the trio kept in touch over the years and decided it was finally time to share their music with the world on Valentine’s Day 2024, nine years after recording. They hope you all enjoy listening to this music as much as they enjoyed creating it!

Heart-Shaped Doughnut is named after a heart-shaped glazed doughnut sold at a nearby bodega that the trio would frequently enjoy together after their practice sessions.
